We are often lured by the promise of new technologies to make our lives easier and help connect us to others. While they do so in many ways, they also present each of us with opportunities to make new choices about how we spend our time and invest our energy. Most gadgets are generally meant to improve the quality of our lives, but it is when we spend too much time with them that they actually do the opposite. By always using our portable emailers, cell phones, video games, and surfing the Internet, we actually become less connected and more distracted. By becoming aware of these tendencies, we harness the power to overcome them and make better choices for ourselves and our families.

Once we decide to consciously put our gadgets to work for us, we become masters of our time. We can give our full attention to whatever we are doing and not let phone conversations and other distractions take the place of human contact. Each of us has the ability to consciously choose to be more present in our lives. We can decide at any time to leave our gadgets behind and become aware of the sights and sounds around us in order to expand our awareness and be fully present in our bodies and our surroundings.

When we use our discernment about how we invest our personal energy, we can be sure that we choose only the best for ourselves and those we love. Our gadgets can be useful tools for our journey in the material world, but we must not forget that we are spiritual beings having a human experience and that means interacting with people on a personal level. Choices that enliven us and help us feel connected to our world and our loved ones always deserve our full attention and presence of mind, body, and spirit.

The Death And Rebirth Of Self

Sometimes a part of us must die before another part can come to life. Even though this is a natural and necessary part of our growth, it is often painful or, if we don’t realize what’s happening, confusing and disorienting. In fact, confusion and disorientation are often the messengers that tell us a shift is taking place within us. These shifts happen throughout the lives of all humans, as we move from infancy to childhood to adolescence and beyond. With each transition from one phase to another, we find ourselves saying good-bye to an old friend, the identity that we formed in order to move through that particular time.

Sometimes we form these identities in relationships or jobs, and when we shift those areas of our life become unsettled. Usually, if we take the time to look into the changing surface of things, we will find that a shift is taking place within us. For example, we may go through one whole chapter of our lives creating a protective shell around ourselves because we need it in order to heal from some early trauma. One day, though, we may find ourselves feeling confined and restless, wanting to move outside the shelter we needed for so long; the new part of ourselves cannot be born within the confines of the shell our old self needed to survive.

We may feel a strange mixture of exhilaration and sadness as we say good-bye to a part of ourselves that is dying and make way for a whole new identity to emerge in its place. We may find inspiration in working with the image of an animal who molts or sheds in order to make way for new skin, fur, or feathers to emerge. For example, keeping a duck feather, or some other symbol of transformation, can remind us that death and rebirth are simply nature’s way of evolving. We can surrender to this process, letting go of our past self with great love and gratitude, and welcoming the new with an open mind and heart, ready for our next phase of life.

It’s easy to forget sometimes that everyone has a story to tell if we take the time to listen. We are so accustomed to hearing the stories of people in the news that we sometimes lose track of the fact that the random stranger on the bus also has a fascinating story about where they came from and how they got to be where they are. The sheer variety of paths taken in this world, from farmers to CEOs to homeless people to world travelers, is indicative of how much we can learn from each individual. Sometimes the shy, quiet person at work has the most amazing life story and the biggest dreams, it is up to us to take the time to find out.

Some people travel a path of wealth and privilege, while others struggle with only themselves to rely on, and both have great stories to tell. Each person learns lessons, makes choices, and develops a unique perspective, which only they can claim and share. Even two people who have had very similar lives will have slightly different experiences, leading them to a different point of view, so each person remains a treasure trove waiting to be explored. When we take the time to ask questions and listen, we find that every person has a fascinating story to tell and an utterly unique perspective from which to tell it.

Bearing this in mind, we have the opportunity to approach the world around us in a new way. There is never any reason to be bored at a party, or on the bus, or in a conversation with a stranger. When we retain the spark of curiosity and the warmth required to open someone up, we always have in front of us the makings of a great story. All we have to do is ask.

First, SWV came out and I was glued to the TV. Next, yes there is a next, ENVOUGE emerges!!! I almost lost it. By far, this group of women have to be one of the best vocal groups. WASHINGTON - Barack Obama pocketed the support of at least four Democratic convention superdelegates on Wednesday, building on the momentum from a convincing North Carolina primary victory. Rival Hillary Rodham Clinton vowed to remain in the race "until there's a nomine.

The former first lady declined to say whether that meant through the roll call of the states at the Democratic National Convention this summer.

Clinton also disclosed that she had loaned her campaign an additional $6.4 million in recent weeks, evidence that her once front-runner campaign was in deep trouble.

She told reporters the loans were a sign of her commitment to her quest for the White House. She earlier loaned herself $5 million as she struggled to keep up with a better-financed Obama campaign.

Obama, now the front-runner, was home in Chicago during the day as his aides spread word that he would soon begin campaigning in states likely to be pivotal in the fall campaign. They also relayed word of the four endorsements, expected to be made public later in the day. Both disclosures were meant to signal fresh confidence that the nomination was quickly coming into his possession after a grueling marathon across 15 months and nearly all 50 states.

Clinton's appearance in Shepherdstown, W.Va., was meant to underscore her determination to stay the course. She also arranged a private meeting later in the day with uncommitted superdelegates.

Jeanette Council, an undecided superdelegate from North Carolina, said she decided over the weekend to endorse Obama but waited until after voters cast their ballots to announce it on Wednesday.

"I just think Senator Obama is the face of America," Council, a commissioner from Cumberland County, said in an interview with The Associated Press. "When I looked at it, I was so excited at the fact that he was bringing in so many new people and there was an excitement around the campaign."

Clinton won the Indiana primary narrowly early Wednesday, but the overall impact of the night's two contests was to lengthen Obama's lead in national convention delegates without fundamentally altering the nature of the race. The results also prompted former Sen. George McGovern, a Clinton backer of several months, to urge her to drop out while endorsing her rival.

Obama has 1,846.5 delegates to 1,696 for Clinton in The Associated Press tally. It takes 2,025 delegates to win the nomination in Denver this summer.

Clinton told reporters it would take 2,209 or 2,210 delegates to win the nomination, not the 2,025 in use by the Democratic National Committee. The higher total would come into play if the delegations were seated from Michigan and Florida, two states that held primaries outside the time frame that party rules required.

The former first lady campaigned for months to have new votes in both states, although lately has said she merely wants the delegations seated.

Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, said on Tuesday night it was possible a compromise could be worked out to seat the Michigan delegates. He did not mention Florida.

Asked at her news conference whether she intended to remain in the race through the convention roll call, Clinton said, "I'm staying in this race until there's a nominee and obviously I am going to work as hard as I can to become that nominee."

Clinton backers appeared on early morning television programs to stress that she was still in the race and to urge party leaders and elected officials known as superdelegates not to flee to Obama.

"This candidacy and this campaign continues on," Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said on CNN.

Obama was 184.5 delegates shy of the number needed to secure the Democratic nomination, his campaign finally steadying after missteps fiercely exploited by the never-say-die Clinton.

His campaign dropped broad hints it was time for the 270 remaining unaligned superdelegates to get off the fence and settle the nomination.

In a counter to Wolfson, Obama communications director Robert Gibbs said: "The delegate math gets exceptionally harder for Senator Clinton every day."

In a memorandum to superdelegates, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe reminded them of the delegate math necessary to secure the nomination. He said Clinton would need to win 68 percent of the remaining delegates to win — an extremely unlikely scenario, made harder by her poor performance Tuesday.

"With the Clinton path to the nomination getting even narrower, we expect new and wildly creative scenarios to emerge in the coming days," Plouffe wrote. "While those scenarios may be entertaining, they are not legitimate and will not be considered legitimate by this campaign or millions of supporters, volunteers and donors."

It was in the superdelegate arena — even more than in the scattered primaries left — that the Democratic hyperdrama was bound to play out.

Clinton vowed to compete tenaciously for West Virginia next week and Kentucky and Oregon after that, and to press "full speed on to the White House."

But she risked running on fumes without an infusion of cash, and made a direct fundraising pitch from the stage in Indianapolis. "I need your help to continue our journey," she said.

And she pledged anew that she would support the Democratic nominee "no matter what happens," a vow also made by her competitor.

But her campaign schedule belied any immediate reconciliation. West Virginia holds its primary on Tuesday. Kentucky and Oregon hold their contests a week later. Puerto Rico is scheduled for June 1 followed promptly by Montana and South Dakota on June 3.

Her campaign is making the case that those contests are crucial to her and will press Democratic party officials to resolve disputed contests in Michigan and Florida, which she won but whose results the party voided because the primaries were held ahead of the schedule set by Democratic Party rules.

Senate passes foreclosure bill

Plan includes tax breaks for builders, credit for the purchase of foreclosed property and grants to buy and repair abandoned homes.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate on Thursday passed a bipartisan package of tax breaks and other steps designed to help businesses and homeowners weather the housing crisis.

The measure passed by an impressive 84-12 vote, but even supporters of it acknowledge it's tilted too much in favor of businesses like homebuilders and does little to help borrowers at risk of losing their homes.

The plan combines large tax breaks for homebuilders and a $7,000 tax credit for people who buy foreclosed properties, as well as $4 billion in grants for communities to buy and fix up abandoned homes.

Despite the impressive vote, the bill will be significantly redrawn by critics in the House.

The White House opposes the plan but has not issued an explicit veto threat. It says parts of the legislation would make the problem worse by depressing some home values and the measure inappropriately uses taxpayer money to bail out lenders saddled with foreclosed houses.

The House challenge

The House is likely to reject key portions of the Senate measure, including $25 billion over three years in tax breaks for money-losing businesses such as homebuilders. A plan adopted Wednesday by a key House panel dropped that idea as well as the tax credit for purchasers of foreclosed homes.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., acknowledged changes will be needed in upcoming talks with the House and the White House.

"This is just the beginning of the process," Reid said. "This bill will go to the House. With the House and the White House we can come up with a piece of legislation fairly quickly."

Before passing the measure, the Senate added $6 billion in unrelated tax breaks for renewable energy producers, despite Senate rules that say tax cuts need to be "paid for" with revenue increases elsewhere in the tax code.

The bill also offers $150 billion for pre-foreclosure counseling and stronger loan disclosure requirements.

Objections

The $25 billion tax break the plan offers to homebuilders and other businesses absorbing heavy losses and the energy tax package were both dropped from an economic rescue plan enacted in February. Critics of those proposals said they were overly expensive and would not stimulate the economy.

But deepening public worries about the housing crisis appear to have emboldened lawmakers to swell the $9 trillion deficit to pay for the measures.

The $7,000 tax credit for the purchase of foreclosed homes, opponents argue, would unfairly reward purchases that would have happened anyway while possibly devaluing other homes. It also could give banks an incentive to foreclose on homes by subsidizing purchases of such properties.

The measure calls for a long-awaited modernization of the Federal Housing Administration that would enable more homeowners to refinance into loans backed by the Depression-era agency.

It includes $10 billion in tax-free mortgage revenue bonds to help homeowners refinance subprime loans, a move endorsed by President Bush.

A House bill takes a far different tack, steering tax breaks toward first-time homebuyers and investors in low-income rental housing. The measure is likely to be paired with a broader housing rescue package being drafted by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., the Financial Services Committee chairman, that would have the FHA step in to back $300 billion in refinanced loans for 1 million or more homeowners who otherwise might face foreclosure.

Under a similar plan by Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., the Banking Committee chairman, the FHA would insure up to $400 billion in loans.

The Bush administration countered those plans Wednesday with its own, far narrower, proposal. It would expand an existing FHA program to allow more homeowners who are facing large rate hikes to refinance into more affordable government-insured loans.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Got a passion for buying sneakers? It could be a good sign, with a poll finding that people who buy three pairs of sneakers or more a year are far more likely to be a leadership type than other people.

Mindset Media, a media company that examines personality traits of different consumers, found that people who buy more than three pairs of sneakers a year are 61 percent more likely to have the qualities of a modern leader.

These qualities were defined as having ideas and vision, and a style with others that is both inclusive and decisive.

The survey of 7,500 people, using market research group Nielsen's online panel, found multi-sneaker buyers were 50 percent more likely to be very assertive and 47 percent more likely to be spontaneous.

Lauren Arvonio, a spokeswoman for Mindset Media, said sneaker buyers were more likely to fly by the seat of their pants.

"It is often said you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear, and now we have some hard data to back that up," Arvonio told Reuters.

"What is interesting is that these personality traits held true across the board, regardless of age, income, or gender."

Previous Mindset Media surveys found that people who pay their credit card bills off each month were more likely to be "highly deliberate," thinking through their actions, but also less modest than others, likely to brag about their habits.

Hybrid car owners were found to be 78 percent more likely to be highly creative than other people and less dogmatic.

I have been following Nikki Jean since sometime time early last year. I came across her myspace page while on Lupe Fiasco's page. I must say that in regards to the overall music scene right now, Nikki is a breath of fresh air. I am SO excited about her being featured on Lupe's The Cool Album. I KNOW for a fact that this woman will be going far. I know this. But, today on All Hip Hop.com there was a lovely article written about Nikki.

Why You Should Know Nikki Jean:

After opening for John Legend, getting free studio time with The Roots, and blogging daily for nearly a year, it turns out the biggest move Nikki Jean ever made was to simply answer the telephone.

Not knowing that a seemingly random phone call from Lupe Fiasco would lead to several tracks on his album The Cool or the tour that followed. Most recently, she is appearing alongside Lupe on the Glow in the Dark Tour with Kanye West.

Her potential is evident, but with a cosigner this well respected, Nikki Jean is poised to begin her career as an artist, and thanks to her blog we get to watch it all as it happens.

Nikki Jean’s guest appearances on Lupe Fiasco’s “Hip Hop Saved My Life” and “Little Weapon” are gaining her fans and opening up many new doors for the artist. Her dramatic yet subdued style instantly enhances both songs.

However, until recently she has performed most often with a band based out of Philadelphia. For Nikki Jean, being part of a larger group is well within her comfort zone. She is the lead singer of the group, Nouveau Riche, which is comprised of five performers, instrumentalists and writers.

“The band is named Nouveau Riche. It means newly rich in French. We prescribe to a philosophy that states that being truly rich is living a rich full life. In that way we are rich. It is our new way of defining wealth, thus Nouveau Riche. The band consists of Dice Raw, Khari Mateen, Dominic Angelella, Joe Baldacci and myself.”

The band combines the concise lyrics of Dice Raw, a long-time affiliate of the Roots with Nikki Jean’s soft and raspy vocals over guitar riffs and live drums. On “Wait a Minute” the two give opposing sides of becoming interested in someone new (Lyric: “All you know about me is the way my jeans fit”).

Their views are mediated by a neutral chorus, and somehow each side still walks away a winner. This occurs again on “Just A Little Louder”, a debate over sexual frustrations and “Save Me.” Their contrast is perfect and the band is quickly gaining popularity with a broad spectrum of fans. Much of their success is due to Nikki Jean’s guest appearances and constant push forward. In the future she hopes to further challenge herself by having a solo release, something that is sure to excite all of her fans.

“I haven’t had much opportunity to sing solo, always with my band or lately with Lupe. I think performing with different people, and by myself, allows me to build different muscles and express different sides of myself.”

The beautiful singer will have her chance to express them all, with the support that is building around her efforts. The response to her at shows is phenomenal, even to those who may have previously been unaware of her presence. It is human curiosity that makes people stare at her in awe, and the same potential that Lupe Fiasco and others have seen shines through.

Retailer Neiman Marcus is embroiled in a federal lawsuit with competitor Saks Fifth Avenue for discrimination against African-Americans. The case stems from a lawsuit filed by a former black executive, Kurtyce Cole, who is a former manager at the Raleigh, N.C., location of Saks Fifth Avenue where he was racially harassed and discriminated against by the general manager, Mohammed Ali, a Middle-Eastern male. Saks corporate management went on to condone the behavior. Saks, looking for something to save them, ridiculously subpoenaed and trolled Cole's medical records, even his childhood school records. Finding nothing, Saks sought help from Neiman Marcus, where Cole had worked in excellence for five years in the late 1990's representing Giorgio Armani.Saks persuaded Neiman Marcus to help them by submitting fraudulent documents to the court that portrayed Cole negatively. But Cole produced documentation of a Neiman Marcus official (Nina Fabian) admitting to using erroneous documents and inaccurate information to harass him and other blacks. And when Cole produced his excellent Neiman Marcus performance records, proving the Neiman Marcus documents a fraud, Saks' defense fell apart and Neiman Marcus found itself in federal court with evidence against it for discriminating against African-Americans. Cole says he held on to the Neiman Marcus documentation over the years just for good record-keeping, and never dreamed it would prove so pivotal.Legal analysts, however, believe the case will have to be brought before the U.S. Supreme Court for a just resolution due to major conflicts of interest with the judge in the case and other missteps by the court. William A. Webb, the judge involved with the case, and his wife Allyson K. Duncan, are both judges either on the U.S. District Court or the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals related to the case. Duncan was also the boss at the law firm representing Saks. This blatant conflict of interest has compromised the case, and the fact that the court is overlooking overwhelming evidence against both companies, has paved the way for Neiman Marcus and Saks to try to escape justice for harassing and discriminating against blacks. Cole says he hopes the change in American leadership that is so desperately wanted and needed for the U.S. will filter down to the courts, especially the lower courts which he says are clearly in a pitiful state of affairs, and given to wrongdoing and corruption.

There are times when we might feel the need to wash away all of our troubles and call forth freshness into our lives. Since the most cleansing substance on this earth is probably water, we can think of the joy rain brings as an energetic bath, rejuvenating our minds, bodies, and souls. Just being able to spend a few moments every time it rains to become aware of the healing powers water brings to us can renew us in so many ways. As we do this we will find that the more we appreciate the universe’s gift to us in the form of rain, the more we can see that a gentle rain shower is a strong reflective tool that has the ability to cleanse our entire being.

The next time it rains might be a good chance to experience the rain through all of your senses, allowing you to truly understand the importance of each and every drop of water. First, take a few minutes to look outside and notice how each individual raindrop seems to come down in a continual stream. By noticing this you can contemplate how it takes many small accomplishments to create the whole of your existence for nothing exists in isolation. Then you might wish to focus your attention on the sound of the rainfall, letting the sounds of drops penetrate into the innermost recesses of your self. Listening in this way may bring you a greater sense of connection with nature and the world around you, knowing that the sounds you hear are an integral part of not just the physical sustenance you require but that they also nourish your spirit.

Consciously using our senses to feel nature’s healing energy as it comes to us in the form of rain is an act of internal cleansing. Just as the rain physically washes over the earth and rinses out any impurities and imperfections, it also bathes our spirit in the joy that comes from knowing that we are one with the world around us.

AHEM!! As I predicted last week, Jabbawockeez has taken the title BEST Dance Crew in America. If you are a fan of these guys, then you can feel the excitement that I am partaking upon right now!! Ok, in the beginning they brought back all of the other eliminated groups for their encore performances with their other regional groups. The West Coasts Killed it! As expected. Fish N Chicks, Kaba Modern, and Jabba. Although it was a lot going on with all those people on that limited size stage it kinda became a bit much, But, ALL groups did their thing. Next, Status Quo and Jabbwockeez partook in a stepping routine....I won't comment, BUT, I will say this. Lets stick to our known style to dance. I know it was a creative move or whatever but, you could tell that these guys were not familiar with stepping. Nonetheless, they both did their thing.

CONGRATULATIONS JABBAWOCKEEZ!!!!

Day 26 - "Got Me Going" has grown on me people. I was a bit skeptical about their CD release. Being, to me, a bit too soon. I actually really like this video and all the transitional special effects it's got. Along with that I have heard the album and I must admit it is pretty good. Some songs I can do without but overall it is a goodie. BUT, since they're with Bad Boy and their track record with their artists, we shall see how long this lasts. No, seriously, I hope Diddy does not screw these talented guys over.

Kaba Modern...I Thought You Were In There, But...

Early in the episode when it was announced that Status Quo would be in the finale...I was, shall we say a bit unhappy about this! Now, not to downgrade Status Quo. Because they are an excellent dance crew, BUT, up against Kaba Modern???? NO WAY! Im Sorry, but at the beginning up the season I knew that Kaba Modern and Jabbawockeez would be the final 2. Guess Not! Had Status Quo been competing in America's Best Acrobatic Dance crew, then yes, they would be reining champs. But, this is DANCE. After week 4, in my opinion, Status Quo had become a bit sloppy with bad transitions, and the dancing was not blowing me away like that of Kaba Modern and Jabbawockeez, who were flawless and maintained good reviews throughout the entire season. Com'on People, You KNOW I'm Right!

I have been following Barack Obama since his running for Senate in 2004. And since his announcement for the President run, I have been heavily following this election. Aside from that, I really admire his passion for change, and his positive outlook, particularly on the racial issue within the United States. Another thing that I admire about this man is his consistency and his uplifting outlook for this country. And unlike his Democratic rival (disappoints me) Obama has not gotten involved in the heavy mudslinging. He is focussed on the ISSUES! He offers a level of honesty to his campaign (not saying that it is ALL Honest, I personally don't have the facts to back this) that makes him, to me, a reliable Presidential Candidate. But HEY, sure can't get no worse than the past 8 years!!

Barack Obama speaks in Philadelphia, PA at Constitution Center, on matters not just of race and recent remarks but of the fundamental path by which America can work together to pursue a better future....Enjoy!

Hello World!

This is my very first blog! (Yay for me) I was introduced by a friend, and thought, Hey, "I should get into this". Sounds like mucho fun. There are so many things that I can talk about, and glad that I have the space in which to broadcast many topics, and eager to see what you readers have to think about them.

My intentions are to blog on just about E-VER-Y-THING! The Latest News In Music (My Fav), Fashion, Politics, Technology, The Economy (Oouch!), and a whole bunch of other stuff. I really consider myself a culture critic, so there is no topic I can't say that I won't touch....But, I am still getting adjusted to all this, so bare with me if it takes time for me to post on a daily.
